Rock Star University | Lessons From A Legend | Johnny Ramone

One day Johnny asked me, "What's been the highlight so far with our friendship?"
I responded with, "Taking me up to San Francisco to hang with Kurt Hammet and Metallica."

Johnny said, "Well, I got something better. The Ramones are getting inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, the ceremony is in New York, and your coming!”

I almost shit myself!

Never in a million years did I think my life would be going in this direction. To top it off, we flew first class, took a limo from the airport to the Waldorf Astoria where we were staying, and where the ceremony was being held. The Ramones were having a documentary film crew following us through all of this. Johnny made sure they put me in it. Watch The Ramones, End Of The Century Documentary. I'm in the elevator with him and Linda as were entering the ballroom to the ceremony. I'm the young unknown guy in the shot. If you ever get a chance to go to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony, I strongly recommend you go! It's pretty amazing to see a legend get into the rock and roll hall of fame, and to be sitting at their table, while surrounded by the best in the music business.

Little did I know that this was my training ground for building my own brand. Johnny took care of everything for the Ramones during their career. He was the accountant for the band. He pretty much managed the whole deal for the other guys. From what Johnny told me, the others were pretty hands off. I never met Joey because they didn't speak to one another, but I did meet the others and believe me, I see why John took care of things. Johnny was all about look of the Ramones and making sure they always stayed true to their identity. He was Militant in his actions. This had a profound effect on me. To see a Rock Musician be so diligent and consistent in his ways. This was my University on how to be a Rock Star.

Brandon Martinez has the sweet life! Here's a little B-Roll from Brandon's trip to Beijing China with Rupert Murdoch's Ex-wife, Wendi Deng. Brandon was hired on to style Wendi's hair for the very elaborate Cosmopolitan Magazine Photo Shoot. Brandon used the both the Spray and Spray Harder on this shoot. Right before shooting, Brandon's curling irons went haywire due to the voltage difference. Brandon's new friends in China saved the day and came just in time with new curling irons from a local beauty supply in downtown Beijing. While on the job, Brandon did a little sight seeing. Now I know what your asking yourself. "Why is B. wearing board shorts, and why is his tan looking so damn good? Is this work?"

I know it looks casual but this gig, so far in my career was my longest, biggest job to date. Longest meaning I was there for a week. Biggest, meaning the biggest production as far as weddings that I have done.

It's not everyday you get flown on a G5 to an non-disclosed location, then taking another little plane to another non-disclosed location, only to be in total paradise for five days straight.

I don't kiss and tell, but what I will say about this wedding is that having a Lobster Tail salad on a huge Yacht, beats any Lobster Tail salad in any restaurant I've ever been to. If you come into a few hundred million, I definitely recommend scoring a Yacht for yourself. It's quite fabulous!

Who is this guy? Only one of the founders of Google, Sergey Brin.
Sergey didn't know who I was because I came through the bride. The brides friend hustled me in for  the gig. I always wondered what these guys think of me when I would show up to do the hair. They would always give me a look like they were expecting a different looking hairstylist. What's always good is that I have been so fortunate and appreciative that the husbands do stay with me, and they become my regulars. I've racked up some nice male, power clients over the years and I take lessons from all of them as much as possible.

I'm also very appreciative of the fact that during this time I was developing B. The Product. The actual hairsprays in my line and the Waxd were tested on this island. I knew that I was going to a pretty humid part of the world, so I took full advantage of the situation and made sure I was prepared with my then, pre-SPRAY, pre-SPRAY HARDER samples. No. I've always had the ability to approach everyone as if they're just a head of hair. I detach who they are as people and totally focus on my skills and ability. Being back on Fairfax where I belong is only another reason to believe that the Universe is in full control of my situation. The backdrops for new, fresh, edgy photos for my revived B. Back in the days doing the B. The Product | Neiman Marcus events was a special time for me. It was supposed to be a dream come true. Reality TV personality gets products into Neiman Marcus! Unfortunately, it nearly cost me everything. Due to the big retailers excessive charge backs, marketing fees, travel costs and everything else that comes with. Samples, gratis, greasing the sales girls etc... I was in Neiman Marcus but could barely pay my rent. On one hand, the buyers are loving you because you're selling, but on the other hand you're dying because the stores end up with 70% of your money! Well those days are long gone now. I discovered this product a couple of years ago when I knew I needed something to save my hair while on vacation in Maui.
